Backsberg Picnic Series 2012

Backsberg Estate Cellars, in association with kykNET, can’t wait to have you on the farm for their third Picnic Concert Series. Brilliant artists such as: Freshly Ground, Francois van Coke, Koos Kombuis and Dan Patlansky will have you tapping your toes to their awesome acoustic vibes.

There is a slight twist with the series this year as each of the performers will be bringing an up and coming artist with them to open the gig. It will be interesting to see who the artists believe is the future of South African music.

There is no better way to spend a Sunday afternoon than relaxing in the sun with a glass of fine wine as brilliant artists entertain you. Pack your umbrella, picnic blankets and lunches as kykNET and Backsberg take care of the rest. Audiences can choose to pre-book a special Backsberg picnic to enjoy with these sunset acoustic performances, or buy one of our famous lamb burgers at the venue.  And, of course, it‘s just better with a glass of Backsberg wine.

Pre-sale tickets for the concerts and picnics will be on sale from the 10th of November from www.ticketbreak.co.za/backsberg Tickets are R85 or R170 with a picnic and R100.00 at the gate. Children under 12 years get in free when accompanied by their parents.

Admission to concert venue starts at 15:00, with the opening act starting at 16:00 and the main act at 17:00. For the full line up of bands, directions, comments, and more information on the series, please visit www.facebook.com/BacksbergConcerts

Surprise at Paul Bothner

Written by: Clinton Koordom
Mark Haze with members of Cape Town alternative band Playing with Reason

On a day where I thought I would just pop in at Paul Bothner’s in N1 City, I read a notice at the entrance of the store stating that endorsee Mark Haze will be doing a meet & greet and having a talk later the evening. I waited a little over an hour to hear what the Idols finalist had to say and it was definitely worth the wait. Spotting him at the signing booth having a chat with manager Nicci Hayden, I went and introduced myself to the very friendly and down to earth musician.

Keeping everything very informal when his talk started, he spoke to the audience all about why and how he started out as a musician. At his current age of 29, I was surprised to learn that his musical journey already started at the shy age of 4. As many people are actually unaware, this was not the first time Mark tried out for Idols. His first attempt at the competition was back in 2002, when Idols initially made its debut on South African shores. Being told that his voice was too “rocky”, he went on his own path with the various bands he had been apart of over the years. Of these bands, the most notable would be 12th Avenue, who will remain the band behind this talented musician.

Continuing with his story leading up to his current success, the very uplifting and inspiring tale of his life captured the attention of all present including a young girl who had brought her guitar along for an autograph. Ending off with a short Q&A session, Mark Haze revealed some details ranging from behind the scenes at Idols all the way down to why he wears a chain on his pants. When the talking was done, those lucky individuals who had the opportunity to listen to his story were treated to a solo acoustic performance of his brilliant new song “Where Angels Fear to Fly”.

Catch Mark Haze this weekend at Obs Arts Festival on 9 & 10 December 2011. Mark Haze has been signed to Universal Music and will start recording his first album in January 2012. Keep an eye on this top South African performer, as only great things are in store.

18 Top South African artists: Ard Matthews, Steve Newman, Farryl Purkiss, Rory Eliot, Brian Finch, Guy Buttery, Christine Weir and Julie Blundell, Janie Bay, Gavin Minter, Louise Day, Tombstone Pete, Andrew James and Steady Tiger, John Ellis, Diesel Vanilla, Machineri, Gary Thomas, Natasha Meister, Jack Mantis.

Real Wired Music, the creators of Vintage Sundays and the Cape Town for Haiti Concert, in association with Eastern Acoustics and Cape Town International Convention Centre,  brings you another extraordinary live music experience.  Together with Sedgwick’s Old Brown Sherry and Marshall Music, the Cape Town Folk ‘n Acoustic Music Festival will bring together 18 top South African artists of this genre in a sophisticated, concert-style setting. The line up sees a mix of great acoustic guitarists like Steve Newman, Gary Thomas and Guy Buttery with singer/songwriter stalwarts like Farryl Purkiss, Rory Eliot, Ard Matthews and Brian Finch. The look and feel of the festival will be in the style of a 70s Folk concert –all artists will perform solo or duo sets completely acoustically.  Performances will be stripped down to the essence of the songs – guitar and voice.

Add to all this some blues sounds from Natasha Meister and Machineri; and some folk /pop by  Janie Bay; and the evening is set for an experience of the finest musical storytelling taken from the personal journeys of some of South Africa`s finest songwriters and musicians.
"I am honoured to be part of the first CT Acoustic and Folk Festival. It is my sincere hope that it will be well supported so that it may become a real highlight on the SA music calendar. SA has such phenomenal talent, all we need now is a place to showcase it. What better place/event than this." Ard Matthews

GOODLUCK Present: THE LUCKY PACKET

Posted by: Ashly Brown
The Lucky Packet. A night of surprises.

GoodLuck gives you your passport to a childhood revisited... Where wonder, fantasy and fun transport you to a world of their imagination.

It’s not a place where people stand and watch you on a stage… They surround you; they engulf you; they are one with the experience.

Leave your pretense behind, come in with an open mind and let us, just for ONE night... Run away together.

“GoodLuck are really trying to raise the bar on production in the club scene and that is 100% the intention behind these events. It is super important to us that we bring the 'wow' factor into these, our first series of self-created events in Cape Town and we needed to find a venue that shares in that vision. Trinity is a great choice because it is sizable enough to have a good crowd but also intimate enough to completely transform into a Wonderland!”

The Lucky Packet events are going to be a spectacle. Think a life size playground for adults. A wonderland... A night of intriguing surprises!

GoodLuck Live at Trinity Wednesdays this December and January featuring Special Guests:

7 December - GoodLuck Live - with Krushed & Sorted and Mr Sakitumi
15  December - GoodLuck Live - with Swing Tings and Dean Fuel - Also Lucky Packet and Trinity's Birthday!
21 December -  GoodLuck Live - with Pascal & Pearce
4 January - GoodLuck Live - with YOAV
11 January - GoodLuck Live - with The Kiffness and 7ft Sound System

Cape Town Bike Festival 16 to 18 December 2011

Posted by: Ashley Brown
Cape Town Bike Festival

EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELLED!

A full-throttle celebration of two-wheeled wonders and everything that goes along with motorbike culture, the Cape Town Bike Festival (CTBF) will roar into life from 16-18 December at the Cape Town Stadium.
And what´s more, not content with merely tearing up the neighbourhood flower beds, the CTBF will be desecrating the Cape Town Stadium turf as the internationally-acclaimed Masters of Dirt bring their death-defying stunts to the party.

A sensory feast full of hi-revving hi-jinks and elements of expo, festival-goers can expect the heady rush of exhaust fumes, a cacophony of international and local music acts, daring dirt bike extravaganzas and, just in case you suffer from good-time memory loss, tattoo artists are there to make their indelible mark.

The first and largest festival of its kind in South Africa, the CTBF isn’t just aimed at bearded men in leathers - although if you’re lucky you might just bump into some of them - instead, the CTBF will be a cultural fix that aims to attract not only the biking fraternity- the beats, broads, beefhearts and boneys, but additional music fans, families and visitors from around the globe.

Set to become an international highlight on the South African events calendar, this three-day festival starts with a breakfast run daily and ends long after sunset.

During daytime festival hours, the custom-built racetrack will be used for Junior MX, Scooter Races and Supercross while South Africa’s Super Motard Champion, the legendary Brian Capper, will be performing stunts to the collective gasps of the crowd.

After dark, the arena will be transformed into an pulsating pyrotechnic production by the world famous ‘Masters of Dirt Freestyle Show’ and top rock and electronic music acts

SEETHER TO ROCK BIKE FEST

International rock sensation, Seether, will headline the music bill at the monumental Cape Town Bike Festival which takes place at the Cape Town Stadium, 16th-18th December 2011.

The first of its kind in South Africa, the Cape Town Bike Festival (CTBF) combines the world of motorbikes with live entertainment, unique product displays and daring dirt bike extravaganzas including the international Masters of Dirt team, over three epic days.

Seether´s unique brand of post-grunge rock, meanwhile, will be one of the highlights of the entertainment offering at the CTBF and will have fans roaring for more with their hits such as “Fake it” and “Rise Above This”.

Formed in 1999 (originally known as Saron Gas), Seether quickly gained prominence in SA’s rock world with their debut release, “Fragile”, becoming one of the best-selling titles of the year, resulting in Seether emerging as a top live band.

Now based in the U.S., Seether made their initial impact on American rock charts with their 2002 album “Disclaimer” and, following a career that has spanned nearly a decade, the power trio of lead singer Shaun Morgan, bassist Dale Stewart and drummer John Humphrey have toured the globe on the back of five Gold and Platinum-selling albums.
